This is a question that I get asked a lot and it is a good one! I have been exploring this for a long time, and I would love to share with you what I’ve learned.

I found when I started writing that I have so much to say on this topic, so I’ve decided to break it up into several parts:

Part I: What My Personal Experiences Have Taught Me

Part II: What I’ve Learned From Others

Part III: What the Scientific Research Shows

Part IV: How YOU Can Use This Information for Your Practice

Part I: What My Personal Experiences Have Taught Me

When I first started experimenting with manifesting and visualizations, I wanted very specific things. This is normal–most of us come to this practice because we want specific things rather than general ones. In my case, I wanted a specific relationship I was in to deepen and be full of peace rather than full of drama and uncertainty.

While you can never change another person’s mind or behavior, it is definitely possible to affect others by changing yourself and engaging God/The Universe to shift the energy you’re in and help out. When I started using the skills of manifesting and visualization for this purpose, my intentions did manifest with a combination of hard work on my part and synchronistic events that unfolded effortlessly for me. When I say hard work, I am referring to a lot of trial and error and anguish from being so attached to the outcome.

So basically, I was doing something right in my manifesting to bring about the synchronistic results and finally the end result itself. And I did often feel myself to be in the flow and trusting God/The Universe. But I was probably also getting in my own way a lot of the time!

The big lesson for me in this experience was that about a year after the relationship stabilized, I realized I had outgrown it.  I had outgrown it after all the hard work and attachment and belief that my life would be perfect and I would be happy, if I had this one end result! That was a HUGE lesson for me along the lines of be careful what you wish for, because you might actually get it.

The synchronistic experiences that led the relationship to grow and manifest, and the big lesson I learned are clues for me that this experience was not in vain and a vital part of my growth.

I came to believe over time, that there may have been a danger in desiring a specific relationship to work better, rather than a desire for a fulfilling relationship in general.

I decided to shift my focus from that point to welcoming love and fulfillment without attachment.  This is not always easy, and I am not always consistent with this, even after all the hard lessons!

My manifestations after this decision were not necessarily better or perfect, but there is a difference. When my focus has not been a specific attachment, I have found more abundance of possibility and less suffering.

So how detailed do you need to be?

Based on my experiences, it doesn’t seem to matter for the manifestation itself if you are detailed or not. I’ve been able to manifest both ways (although it should be noted that both ways must include a specific end result, whether detailed or general).

I found that having a very detailed end result caused more suffering because of attachment to the details. So perhaps it’s not the details themselves that are the problem, but the attachment we create to them.  On the other hand, I found that having a more general end result in mind brought more possibilities effortlessly and quickly with no suffering at all.

  4. Hi Jill,
Yes I do feel that not being attached to the outcome is the most important thing, but not easy to be sure! The more we grasp at things, the more we seem to push them away, while steady focus without attachment allows our intentions to come towards us. Such a simple concept, yet it does take practice to implement!

  5. Specific verses general, hum, this is an interesting concept, are you saying that one shouldn’t have any attachments to the outcome? ; likewise “be careful what you wish for because you just might get it” has lots of examining to be done as far as i’m personally concerned. There is lots to think about here, Christina, and I thank you for your insights.
