Do you ever dream about what you would be like if you had your ideal life?

Imagine a life where you feel secure and confident, where you have your dream job, your perfect partner, or more money than you know what to do with.

Or a life where you always know how to handle every difficult situation with wisdom, ease, and grace.

Well, I want to share with you an epiphany I had recently about how to invoke your Higher Self, and the steps I’ve taken on my journey to become my Higher Self.

Here is a visualization you can try. This is the visualization that I did when I first started to explore this concept.

Imagine yourself in a dark tunnel.  The dark tunnel represents being in a place where there are things you don’t like–it can be circumstances or negative emotions that don’t feel good. You may not be readily aware of any negative emotions, because sometimes we stuff these down, but there are always so many emotions within in us at any given time. Connect to the ones that make you uncomfortable, so they can be recognized and processed. Check in with yourself to see if there is any frustration or anger.  Sometimes beneath anger, there is sadness. Feel whatever is there.

How does your feeling affect this environment, this dark tunnel? Feel yourself sink into this space even though it may be scary. Touch the walls of the tunnel. How do they feel?  Are they cold and hard? Are they sticky and yucky like tar? Do you feel warmth or coolness? What does the surface feel like beneath your feet in this place? Is it soft? Does it feel like your feet are sinking into the ground? Do you feel supported?

Begin to walk through the tunnel, aware of your feelings internally, and aware of the dark space they make around you. Imagine that you see a speck of light at the end of the tunnel. You move closer and closer to it and it grows brighter and brighter. You can feel the light changing how you feel. It is spreading into the crevices and darkness of the tunnel as you get closer and closer to it.

Now you are emerging from the tunnel. Imagine yourself in a beautiful sun-filled landscape. It can be a meadow, a beach, a garden–this is your sacred space. You can make it whatever you want it to be. Now turn to your right, and you will see your Higher Self standing there with you. What does she look like? What is her name? What is she wearing? Think about the questions you have that pertain to your life. Maybe about how to handle a certain situation, about which career path to take, and ask her your questions. She knows all the answers.

This visualization is very much about alchemy and transformation. It is about moving from the place of darkness. This could be what you dislike about your current self (and we all have some things we dislike) and bringing forth all the good that is already present and waiting to be recognized (which we all have also).

When I did this visualization, I saw myself with red hair–which is interesting, because my hair is not naturally red. I realized that all of my life, whenever I represent myself in art, I always made my hair red. I’m not sure what any of that means, but it feels good to have a clear image in my mind of my Higher Self!

Consulting With My Higher Self

After doing this visualization for the first time, I started to regularly visit the sacred space I created in my mind and consult with my Higher Self. I grew to love the sacred space that I visualized so much, that it often amazed me that I could go there anytime for free!

I would be sitting in my office feeling stressed, pondering a situation I didn’t know how to handle, and then I would see my sacred space. I didn’t even have to close my eyes! I could feel the sun on my skin and see the shadows on the ground from the nearby trees.  I could hear the nearby water and see it. I could be in the most beautiful place imaginable, even though I was really feeling stressed in a fluorescent-lit office.  I would get my bearings and then look for my guide, my Higher Self. She would come out with long red hair, wearing a pretty lacy dress. I would tell her my concerns and ask for her advice. Sometimes she would give me a clear answer that was helpful. She is the voice of my intuition.

Sometimes the answer isn’t clear, or the answer is to wait, or the answer is there is no right answer. That’s okay too.

All you have to do is have a clear picture in your mind of what your Higher Self looks like and a sacred space to imagine yourself in with her.  Taking the time to hear what she has to say is really listening to the voice of your intuition.

Seeing My Higher Self in a Dream

A few weeks ago I had a dream that I was at a party, and I was upset that I didn’t look as good as I wanted to. Normally before going to a party, I would take the time to select the right outfit with matching jewelry and put on some makeup. But it was almost like I ended up at this party on one of those days where my minimal makeup had already faded and I was just wearing a casual “around the house” outfit.

But then I caught sight of myself in a full length mirror, and my reflection surprised me. The girl I saw in the mirror had long, red, wavy hair, similar to a painting I had done, even though my hair was brown at the time. She was wearing a purple medieval-style dress that I actually own, but haven’t worn in almost a decade. My face was not my own, but the face of the girl in my painting. Her face was perfection even though it was pale and she wasn’t wearing any makeup. I was surprised to see that I looked flawlessly beautiful. I noticed a band around my head, and when I went to touch it, I realized it was a diamond tiara, and that I could raise it up.

I later interpreted this dream to mean that I saw my Higher Self in the mirror, and that she is exquisite and fully realized even if I feel on the outside like I’m not.

Becoming My Higher Self and How to Become Yours

When I first started belly dancing, the idea of dancing as a performer seemed very far-fetched. So when my belly dance instructor lectured us on performance habits, it all seemed a little premature.

I figured, does it really matter if I’m not doing this move quite right just for this class?

Well now I feel like the answer is YES, because now is really all we have. NOW is the time to live, dance, or do whatever it is that you want to do, in the most exquisite way possible. And please understand, this is not about being perfect. This is simply about OWNING the best possible image of yourself and stepping into it.

In a book I was reading, I came across this question:

If you had to describe to someone else how to be you for a day, what would you tell them?  What kinds of thoughts and beliefs would this person need to have to be you? How would you instruct them to stand, to move?

When you ask yourself this question, you realize that being you actually consists of  choices you are constantly  making from moment to moment about what you think, say, feel, and how you carry yourself.

But here’s the real gold–even more important than what you currently do is what your Higher Self would do. Right now. Not far off in some distant future when your external circumstances are perfect.

Now when I’m feeling stressed, I like to imagine I’m the girl I saw in the mirror, my Higher Self, on the inside. It doesn’t matter what I look like on the outside. It doesn’t matter if my thoughts are beginning to  trail off on a path of negative thinking that doesn’t serve me. I can catch them!

I can ask myself, “What would she think or feel about this? How would she carry herself as she’s walking down the street? How would she handle this situation?”

The beauty of this technique is that it allows you to create change from the inside out. It may seem silly to feel like your highest, most realized self on the inside, when your external circumstances are less than great. It’s very counterintuitive.  But this is actually the quickest way to change your external circumstances by changing your internal landscape and acting as if it is already a reality. You live as if you already are your higher, most realized self, and then you become this person, and your external world changes, because you are interacting with it differently.

So here are the 3 steps to Invoking Your Higher Self:

1)  Have a clear picture of what your Higher Self looks like

2)  Get to know your Higher Self and ask her advice

3)  BECOME your Higher Self

Visualization is really the best tool for this. It is important to know what your ideal picture looks like externally, and then to start interacting with the parts of yourself that best match what you want to become.  Then you want to start behaving like your Higher Self and consulting your own inner wisdom.  Remember that it’s there inside of you, even if you don’t feel it.
